In the 1830s, the holiness movement in America taught the Wesleyan doctrine of the second blessing (sometimes called the double cure). The first blessing was salvation, and the second blessing was to give power for holy living. Terms such as baptism in the Holy Spirit and the tongue of fire began to fill holiness literature and songs, but without today’s Pentecostal meanings.
